What to Watch Sunday: All you need to know about Puppy Bowl vs Super Bowl tonight
Puppy Bowl XVIII (Animal Planet) - Puppy Bowl gets a significant upgrade in its coaching staff in its 18th year, adding Snoop Dogg (Team Fluff) and his best pal Martha Stewart (Team Ruff). (Honestly, they missed a great opportunity here not to name Snoop’s team Team Puff). The gridiron contest features adoptable rescue puppies (and a few kittens) from around the country. There’s a full day of alternate programming, starting with:
- “Puppy Bowl Nation” at 7 a.m.
- “Puppy Bowl Presents: Dog Bowl All Stars” at 8 a.m.
- “Puppy Bowl Presents: The Dog Bowl” at 9 a.m.
- “Puppy Bowl XVIII Presents: Where Are They Now” at 10 a.m.
- “From Puppy Bowl with Love” at 11 a.m.
- “Puppy Bowl XVIII Presents: Inside the Bowl” at noon
- “Puppy Bowl XVIII Pregame Show” from 1 to 2 p.m.
- The main event, “Puppy Bowl XVII,” running from 2 to 5. After that, it’ll repeat on a loop until 3 a.m. Monday.
Of local interest in this year’s Puppy Bowl, a kitten from Raleigh named Sunny will be featured as one of the many rescue pets available for adoption. Sunny currently resides at SAFE Haven for Cats.
Kitten Bowl (Nope!) - There is no more Kitten Bowl! Cue the outrage!! Hallmark has decided after 8 years of Kitten Bowl cuteness that it’s out of the animal business. I guess they need to focus every dime on more cookie-cutter romance movies filmed in Canada. (Can you hear me scowling through the keyboard?)
- Note: The good news is that Hallmark’s rival network GAC Family has vowed to present a version of the Kitten Bowl (it’ll also feature puppies, for some reason), starting in 2023.
Super Bowl LVI (6 p.m., NBC) - NBC takes a break from Olympics action to present the single biggest game of the year. For Super Bowl 56, it’s the Los Angeles Rams vs. the Cincinnati Bengals playing at SoFi Stadium in LA. Los Angeles looks to become the second straight club to host and win the game after Tampa Bay’s victory last year. Los Angeles last played in Super Bowl 53, while Cincinnati fell in Super Bowl 23. The game will feature some NC State players from the Class of 2014.
- Note: You can still watch Winter Olympics until noon on NBC and all day on Peacock.
- Note: “Road to the Super Bowl” airs at noon on NBC and the “Super Bowl Pregame Show” starts at 1 p.m.
