What to watch Thursday: All hail Jack McCoy as the ‘Law & Order’ mothership returns
Law & Order (8 p.m., NBC) - The return of the original “Law & Order” is basically a dream come true for me. I love this show so much and raged when it was canceled after 20 seasons in 2010. My extreme “Law & Order” (and by extension, Sam Waterston) fandom even managed to get me an afternoon on the set at New York’s Chelsea Piers once, years ago in one of the prime seasons (it was the Waterston/Carey Lowell/Jerry Orbach/Ben Bratt lineup). But that’s a long story interesting to no one but me. Just know that tonight at 8 p.m., I’ll be glued to my TV, waiting for the first “dun-dun!”
Here’s what to know about the returning show.
▪ Waterston and Anthony Anderson are the only two returning actors from the original run. Anderson, best known as the star of “Black-ish,” was on “L&O” in 2008 playing Det. Kevin Bernard. He reprises that role for the new run.
▪ The new cast includes Hugh Dancy as ADA Noal Price; Camryn Manheim as Lt. Kate Dixon; Jeffrey Donovan as Det. Frank Cosgroveand; and Odelya Halevi as ADA Samantha Maroun.
▪ Donovan, best known as the star of “Burn Notice,” has been on “Law & Order” before, but in different roles. He appeared in the Season 6 episode “Jeopardy,” and more memorably, as the “bad guy” in the Season 17 episode “Good Faith.”
▪ The logline for the Season 21 premiere episode airing tonight reads: “Newly acquainted partners Bernard and Cosgrove investigate the murder of a notorious entertainer. A dispute over throwing out a confession creates a rift in the DA’s office.”
▪ Thursday is now your “Law & Order” night. Following the mothership at 8 p.m. there’s “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” at 9 and “Law & Order: Organized Crime” at 10.
