2020 Grads: Virtual Senior Sendoffs
The final days of high school for the Class of 2020 come at a memorable but tumultuous time. In March, officials closed school doors weeks early and canceled many traditional graduation ceremonies to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Life grew even more uncertain in the ensuing months. In April and May, the coronavirus pandemic caused the economy to rapidly contract, affecting grocery supplies and available jobs. By June, youth across the nation helped lead protests of police powers and systemic racism after the high-profile death of George Floyd, a black man in Minneapolis.
But inspiration abounds in adversity, evident in the replacement plans for drive-through or online graduations to honor the high school seniors who witnessed teachers convert their lesson plans for virtual classrooms, school buses become mobile WiFi hotspots and cafeteria workers help feed disadvantaged families.
That indomitable spirit continues in these messages to and by Class of 2020 graduates. We compiled some of the best speeches by notable local students and asked a few celebrities to share their advice as well.
