John Lewis “Jack” Edwards, died at home Saturday, January 31, 2015 at the age of 87. His life displayed quiet wisdom and unswerving service and loyalty to his family, community and country.
Born in Henderson, NC, he worked for Western Union prior to serving in the Merchant Marines in WWII. During the Korean War, he served in the US Army 45th Infantry, 45th Signal Company, training in Japan and stationed in Korea. He recalled those days in the service fondly.
Returning to NC, he met and is survived by Martha King Edwards, his wife of 60 years. They were blessed with two daughters, Jacqueline, whom he has now been reunited with, and Nancy, who married Corey Musselman. His beloved grandsons are John Nathan and namesake, Lewis Edwards.
Jack’s career included leadership at McCracken Oil, as well as Edwards Home Furnishings from which he retired. Serving as the treasurer of New Hope Baptist Church for 28 years, he cherished his men’s class and his faith was exemplary. A member of the Greatest Generation, he will be sorely missed.
A service will be held at New Hope Baptist Church, 4301 Louisburg Road, Raleigh, Wednesday, February 4, 2015 at 2:00 pm with Military Honors. Graveside will follow at 4:00 pm at Island Creek Baptist Church, 950 Stagecoach Road, Henderson.
