Garments from more than 30 student designers hit the runway this week at the NC Central University Textiles and Apparel program fashion show competition on March 24.

This year’s theme is “106 and Fashion,” a play on “106 and Park,” a popular hip-hop countdown show that aired from 2000-2014 on BET. So, of course, music — particularly hip-hop from the late ‘90s and first decade of the 2000s — serves as inspiration for many of the designers.

“My inspiration was the ‘90s — I love that era,” says senior Alexis Sloan. “Of course I was born in that era, but I love the music.”

After graduating, Sloan plans to work in fashion on the business side, but this show allows her to gain perspective of the design process and share her style perspective.

“My inspiration in general is being able to create and showcase my creativity to the world,” she says.

Each student has spent weeks designing and creating four garments for the show.

The show will be at 7 p.m. in McDougal-McLendon Arena on the NCCU campus. Tickets are $6 in advance, $8 at the door or $25 with reception admission included. Call 919-530-7145 for tickets.
