Creedmoor Road 5-vehicle wreck kills 1, injures 5; driver to face felony charge

A Johnston County man died and an Onslow County man was charged with death by vehicle and driving while impaired after his pickup truck hit or damaged four other vehicles on N.C. 50 north of Raleigh on Tuesday night, the State Highway Patrol said.

Troopers said Thomas Thacker III, 58, of Holly Berry Lane in Selma died when the pickup hit his 2000 Toyota head-on.

The pickup driver, Jasmin Noel, 49, of Oakwood Avenue in Jacksonville, was charged with felony death by vehicle, DWI and a seat-belt violation, highway patrol spokesman Sgt. Chris Knox said.

The wreck happened about 10:15 p.m. between Mattlyn Court and North Falls Drive, Knox said.

Investigating troopers said Noel’s 2017 Nissan truck was going south at a high speed when it sideswiped a northbound Ford car.

They said the pickup then hit Thacker’s car and rolled over and continued going south. It sideswiped another northbound car, and a tire flew off the pickup and hit a fifth car, Knox said.

Noel and a passenger in the pickup were taken to WakeMed Hospital. Troopers said EMS paramedics reported they did not have life-threatening injuries.

One person was taken to Rex Hospital and two were taken to Duke Raleigh Hospital, Knox said.

Noel remained in the hospital Wednesday morning and had not been taken for booking on the charges.
