Man at center of police beating case is accused of assaulting police officer
Kyron Hinton, whose beating in April led to three law officers being charged with felony assault, was arrested this week on charges of assaulting a police officer.
Hinton, 29, was charged by police Thursday night with assault on a law enforcement officer; damage to government property; resist, delay and obstruct; and second-degree trespassing, according to police spokeswoman Laura Hourigan.
It was about 8:30 p.m. when officers arrived at the Longview Grocery located at 2405 Poole Road following reports of a disturbance. Police said a man, later identified as Hinton, was acting erratically by swinging a bottle of bleach and an ash trash stand. Hinton continued to kick and resist when the officers attempted to secure him, police said.
Hinton was the central figure in a high-profile case in April when two state troopers and a Wake County sheriff’s deputy were accused of using excessive force while placing Hinton under arrest on a downtown road.

One month later, members of a Wake County grand jury returned indictments charging the officers with felony assault.
The state troopers, Michael George Blake and Tabithia Davis, were fired in June . Their supervising officer, Sgt. R.W. Goswick, was placed on administrative duty the same day the troopers were fired.
According to an SBI affidavit associated with the case, Goswick conferred with Blake and Davis at the scene. Goswick told the troopers that he had reviewed video of the incident and that no use of force was evident, according to the affidavit.
Wake sheriff’s deputy, Cameron Broadwell, has been placed on administrative duty pending the disposition of the charges.
Law enforcement videos show an agitated Hinton on April 3, when he was standing in the middle of Raleigh Boulevard in East Raleigh.
Hinton was bitten by a Wake County sheriff’s deputy’s dog and struck by officers. He appeared to be singing and yelling as cars passed by him and was unarmed. The Wake County District Attorney’s Office determined that the Raleigh officers at the scene did not use excessive force.
Hinton has struggled with alcohol, drugs and untreated mental health issues, his mother, Vicki Hinton, told The News & Observer in June.
Thursday’s arrest marks the second time Hinton has been charged with assaulting a law enforcement officer since his encounter with law officers in April.
On June 3, Hinton was cited for assaulting a Wake sheriff’s deputy. The Wake County Sheriff’s Office said it responded at about 12:20 a.m. to a reported shooting at Vicki Hinton’s home in the 2300 block of Golden Avenue in Raleigh. Deputies didn’t find a shooting victim, but they did find Hinton behind the residence, the sheriff’s office reported.
Based on the deputies’ observations of Hinton, they asked EMS to evaluate him. EMS personnel, Hinton’s mother and deputies helped him get to the ambulance, the sheriff’s office reported.
“Once in the ambulance, Mr. Hinton became combative and resisted treatment,” the sheriff’s office reported in an email to The News & Observer. “During the evaluation, Mr. Hinton kicked a deputy.”
Following Thursday night’s incident, officers contacted medical personnel in order to provide medical assistance, Hourigan reported. Hinton was subsequently transported to Wake Med for evaluation.
