What to Watch on Friday: Netflix’s ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ features Raleigh actor
The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (Netflix) - This “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” spinoff imagines the origin story of Sabrina in a dark coming-of-age story that deals in horror, the occult and witchcraft. Tonally it’s nothing like the original — think more along the lines of “Rosemary’s Baby” — and it involves Sabrina wrestling with her dual nature, being half-witch and half-mortal. It stars Kiernan Shipka (Sally from “Mad Men”) as Sabrina but it also features Lachlan Watson of Raleigh (see photo below) as Susie, one of Sabrina’s friends at Baxter High and a founding member of the school’s WICCA club. According to an E! cast guide, Susie, who is being bullied at school, lives on a farm on the outskirts of town and must deal with a terrifying supernatural threat at home. Watson, who like the Susie character is non-binary, recently told Variety: “Susie provides a side of feminism that really represents that you really don’t have to be female to be a feminist. It really encompasses all minorities and all misunderstood people, or gender inequality as a whole, I think. Throughout Susie’s sort of queer journey — specifically a bit of a genderqueer journey — which really speaks to me, it’s having that group of incredible feminists behind their back.”
It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (8 p.m., ABC) — In this 1966 animated classic, Linus waits in the pumpkin patch for the elusive Halloween symbol to appear. We also get a bonus cartoon, “You’re Not Elected, Charlie Brown,” which has Linus running for class president.
Midnight, Texas (9 p.m., NBC) - In the Season 2 premiere, Manfred discovers the strange dreams he’s having are disturbingly real, just as Midnight’s newfound peace is disrupted.
