Man hit, killed while trying to cross South Saunders Street
A man died Saturday night after he tried to cross South Saunders Street south of the Beltline and was hit by a pickup truck, according to police.
Felix Zarate-Salinas of Wilderness Road was crossing from the east side of the road in front of the Quality Inn near the entrance to Sam’s Club when he was hit. Zarate-Salinas had gotten across a right-turn lane and was hit in the first of three travel lanes on northbound South Saunders at about 8:15 p.m.
There was no crosswalk where he was attempting to cross. Police suspect Zarate-Salinas was under the influence of alcohol at the time, according to an accident report.
The pickup, driven by David Cuevas of Durham, was going about 40 mph just before the collision, which is under the posted speed limit of 45 mph. He was not injured and not cited by police.
Northbound South Saunders Street was closed for a time after the accident.
