Wake Forest 38 Heritage 2
After the first quarter closed in a scoreless tie, Wake Forest flipped a switch Friday night.
The Cougars (9-0) exploded for a 25-point second quarter — 38 unanswered — to put away the Heritage Huskies 38-2 and clinch yet another regular season Northern conference championship.
The victory also extended Wake Forest’s program winning streak to 40 games, the longest current streak in the state. The Cougars are now 8-0 versus the Huskies, since Heritage’s football program began competing in 2011.
The teams traded punts and turnovers during the first quarter. With 10 minutes remaining in the second quarter, the Cougars struck first on a 20-yard rushing touchdown by senior Traveon Kenion.
From there, it was all Wake Forest.
Maquel Haywood broke off two long rushing touchdowns, from 64 and 61 yards, respectively. Before the quarter had ended, Kenion broke off his own second rushing touchdown of the day, to push Wake Forest’s lead to 25-0 at the half.
Cougars quarterback Mateo Sudipo passed and rushed for touchdowns in the second half to raise the lead to 38-0.
The Huskies managed to get on the board in the closing minute of the third quarter on a safety.
Both teams will be back in action next Friday night to close out the regular season. Heritage will travel to Wakefield (4-6), while Wake Forest will host Corinth Holders (3-7) for senior night.
Cleveland 28 South Johnston 13
Cleveland took back the Greater Neuse conference championship last night, riding its impressive passing game to a 28-13 win over South Johnston for the title.
South Johnston got on the board first, courtesy of a Jaequan Wells rushing touchdown four minutes in.
However, costly mistakes allowed Cleveland to gain momentum. The Rams turned a fumble recovery into a Jalen Chadwick rushing touchdown with two minutes remaining in the first quarter, to knot the game at 7.
From there, Rams quarterback Darius Ocean took over.
Ocean passed for three consecutive touchdowns, raising his season total to 26 scores. He entered the game with 23 touchdown passes, the 19th best mark in North Carolina.
Cleveland will close their regular season campaign next Friday night at home against Fuquay-Varina.
Enloe 0 Cardinal Gibbons 45
Coming off a heartbreaking 31-28 home loss to Leesville on Monday night, Enloe just didn’t have it Friday night.
The Eagles were thoroughly outplayed by a talented Cardinal Gibbons team, losing 45-0 on the road to close the 2018 regular season with back-to-back losses. The win brought Gibbons sole possession of the CAP 7 regular season conference championship.
Gibbons quarterback Nick Frey passed for two touchdowns and ran for one in the victory.
While Enloe will have to wait for the state playoffs, Gibbons has one more game remaining on its schedule. The Crusaders will travel to Northern for a date with the 10-0 Knights, who defeated Northwood 23-0 tonight, next Friday.
