Thieves disabled the Boys and Girls Club buses in Durham last weekend. Here’s how you can help
In response to a sad act, Duke baseball and the Durham Bulls are making an effort to help out.
The Boys and Girls Club of Durham and Orange Counties was victimized by theft last weekend when catalytic converters were stolen from their buses parked at their East Pettigrew Street facility in Durham.
To help cover the $7,000 in losses, ticket proceeds from Duke’s baseball game against Campbell at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Wednesday will be donated to the Boys and Girls club.
“We are absolutely thrilled to be able to partner with the Durham Bulls and the Durham community to help turn an unfortunate situation into a positive outcome for an outstanding organization like the Boys and Girls Clubs,” Duke University Senior Associate Director of Athletics Brad Berndt said in a statement.
The game starts at 4 p.m. at the downtown stadium Duke shares with the Durham Bulls. Advance Auto Parts is also partner with Duke and the Bulls to help repair the buses.
“We’re very disheartened by what happened to the Boys and Girls Club’s buses,” Durham Bulls Vice President Mike Birling said in a statement. “However, we’re eager to support the group by helping to replace the stolen parts, and any other way we can to aid the organization in its important work throughout the region. We’re grateful to work with our partners Advance Auto Parts and Duke, who share our commitment to improving our community.”
Tickets are $9 with senior and youth tickets priced at $7. They can be purchased here. Anyone not able to attend the game but wishing to donate to the cause can do so here.
“What happened to us is heartbreaking, it is really,” said Jerome Levisy, CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Durham and Orange Counties. “We have a responsibility to over 100 children each day to not only transport them safely, but to provide meals, impactful programs and academic assistance. I owe a big thank you to the Durham Bulls and Duke for the way they rallied behind this issue and offered their support, and for connecting us with Advance Auto Parts.”
