CMS suspends all travel due to coronavirus; will high school teams still go to state finals?
Tuesday night, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools suspended all travel. Two CMS basketball teams -- the North Mecklenburg boys and Vance girls -- are scheduled to play state championship games in Chapel Hill Saturday.
Will they still be able to go? This is a developing story.
Below is the statement from CMS:
“The Coronavirus crisis continues to be extremely fluid. Here is what we have decided to do as of today, March 10. Please note that because things can change so quickly, we may be taking other actions in days to come. As of today, we are suspending all travel. This means that district-sponsored trips of any kind for staff or students are suspended for now.
We are awaiting guidance from the North Carolina High School Athletic Association about next steps. In addition, we will be talking early tomorrow morning with the other large districts in North Carolina about the best way to handle athletic and other competitions, and we’ll share any decisions with you as soon as they’re made.
You may be aware that North Carolina is now under a state of emergency, too. We are talking regularly and frequently with Mecklenburg County health officials. We will continue to monitor and make decisions as they are needed, and we’ll keep you advised.”
