Shaffer’s 10th-inning double carries Durham Bulls past Norfolk 4-2

Richie Shaffer laced a two-run double during the 10th inning to break a tie Thursday night, lifting the Durham Bulls to a 4-2 win against the Norfolk Tides.

Shaffer connected against Pedro Beato ( 0-1) just after third baseman Michael Almanzar threw away a ground ball at first base to give Durham (9-6) life in the 10th.

Jhan Marinez ( 2-1) pitched the final two innings to earn the win.

Durham took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Jaff Decker’s double play brought Patrick Leonard home from third.

The Tides (4-10) evened the score on a Garabez Rosa homer in the third against starter Adam Wilk. The Tides went ahead in the fifth on a single from Ozzie Martinez.

However the Bulls rallied in the seventh to make it 2-2. Kyle Roller began the inning with a wind-blown single, with Dayron Varona singling sharply. After a strikeout, Terry Doyle walked Patrick Leonard to fill the bases. After a pitching change, Carlos Corporan singled to score Roller for the tie. But consecutive strikeouts would end the inning tied.

In the 10th, Daniel Robertson singled with one out, advanced to third when Taylor Motter’s grounder to third was thrown wildly by Michael Almanzar past first base. Shaffer then drilled a two-run double into the left-field corner.

Wilk worked five innings, permitting five hits and two runs.

The Bulls will play the second game of their series at 7:05 p.m. Friday. Durham’s Blake Snell (1-1, 2.51 ERA) is slated to oppose Ariel Miranda (0-1, 4.22) at Harbor Park.
