Bullpen collapses in 8th as Mudcats fall 7-6 to Lynchburg

Relievers Michael O’Neal and Chase Johnson-Mullins lost a three run eighth-inning lead and allowed the Hillcats to rally for five late runs as the Mudcats lost to visiting Lynchburg 7-6 at Five County Stadium on Saturday night.

The Mudcats (11-12) led 5-2 going into the eighth, but saw the lead evaporate as the Northern Division-leading Hillcats (17-6) rallied for five runs and three hits in the inning to take their first lead of the game.

Reed Harper was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored in the loss for Carolina.

The victory evened the series at a game apiece between Lynchburg and Carolina. The rubber game is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoon at Five County Stadium in Zebulon. The Mudcats will start RHP Matt Withrow (0-1, 0.79) in the series finale. The Hillcats will go with the Carolina League ERA and wins leader RHP Julian Merryweather (4-0, 0.76).
