Durham drops series with extra-innings loss
The Durham Bulls dropped the rubber game of their three-game series with the Charlotte Knights, falling 5-4 in 12 innings Sunday afternoon at BB&T Ballpark.
In the bottom of the 12th, Daniel Fields led off with a single before advancing to second base on a sacrifice bunt. After stealing third, Fields scored on a wild pitch to give the Knights (20-18) the series win.
The Bulls (16-22) jumped out to a lead in the top of the first inning, when Jaff Decker blasted a solo homer. The Knights came back in the bottom of the inning though, scoring three runs behind five hits to take a 3-1 lead.
That score held until sixth inning, when Decker earned a walk and came around to score on a two-out double by Nick Franklin to cut the deficit to 3-2.
In the ninth inning the Bulls rallied, as Daniel Robertson drilled a two-run double on the ninth pitch of his at-bat to score Richie Shaffer and Franklin to put the visitors ahead 4-3. The home side countered in the bottom of the frame though, as the Durham bullpen issued four walks, culminating with a bases-loaded free pass to Fields that tied the game.
Terance Marin (3-3) picked up the win, tossing a scoreless 12th frame for the home side. Parker Markel (0-1) took the loss for Durham, allowing a run in 1 2/3 innings of relief.
Offensively Franklin turned in his second straight three-hit day, going 3-for-5 with two doubles. Cameron Seitzer chipped in two hits, while Decker went 1-for-3 with three walks.
The Bulls’ road trip continues Monday when they open a three-game series at Gwinnett. RHP Jaime Schultz (3-1, 2.54) takes the mound for Durham opposite RHP Casey Kelly (1-1, 2.93) for the G-Braves. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
