We know there will be barbecue at Raleigh’s Smoky Hollow. Here’s what else is planned
One of downtown Raleigh’s newest developments, the Smoky Hollow project off of Peace Street near downtown, recently announced a roster of new restaurant projects.
Joining the previously announced Midwood Smokehouse are Dose Yoga + Smoothies; Madre, a new tapas restaurant from the owners of Happy + Hale, and a second location for J. Lights Market.
Smoky Hollow is the latest major development from Kane Realty, which created North Hills and The Dillon downtown. Smoky Hollow is anchored by a Publix grocery store and includes more than 600 apartment buildings, plus office and retail space.
This summer, Midwood Smokehouse, one of Charlotte’s most popular barbecue restaurants, announced a move into the Triangle with the company’s first Raleigh location.
“We have had our sights on Raleigh for a few years after having previous success there with Bad Daddy’s, and are looking forward to officially bringing Midwood Smokehouse to that market,” owner Frank Scibelli said at the time. “Our pitmasters and crew look forward to serving some of the best barbecue at what will be our sixth location in the Carolinas.”
A hot yoga and smoothie bar, Dose Yoga + Smoothies, will join Smoky Hollow. Started by Emily Wallace, a cofounder of Midtown Yoga, this will be the first Dose location and will specialize in the hot form of yoga, plus all-natural smoothies.
From the owner of Happy + Hale comes Madre, a new Spanish and Mediterranean tapas restaurant. Happy + Hale owner Tyler Helikson partnered with Brad Shoff to create the full-service restaurant, an expansion on the fast-casual empire built by the popular salad and grain restaurant group.
“From the very start of this project, we wanted to ensure that Smoky Hollow had a strong representation from our local community — from the initial design to the ultimate retail tenant mix,” said John Kane, CEO of Kane Realty Corporation, in a release. “These retail businesses exemplify everything we could want in a partner — creative, innovative, and resilient.”
The Durham cafe and bar J. Lights Market plans to expand to Raleigh, bringing crafted versions of classic sandwiches, local beer and cocktails and an espresso bar. Owned by Jared Burton, J. Lights opened last year in Durham’s Golden Belt complex.
“These businesses coming to Smoky Hollow are evidence of the growing momentum of investment and energy in this rapidly changing part of Downtown and Raleigh, which is encouraging as the city gets back on its feet in the wake of COVID-19,” said Bill King, president and CEO of the Downtown Raleigh Alliance in a release.
“Kane Realty, Williams Realty & Building Company, and Lionstone Investments forged ahead on this important project that truly establishes a Northern gateway to Downtown Raleigh and brings a new type of placemaking to this part of downtown, so I’m proud that Smoky Hollow will soon be fully open for business, featuring so many local establishments for the community to enjoy.”
