Major Airline Suspends All Flights to Key U.S. Airport

It's been a rough few weeks for airlines across the world as fuel prices surge following the conflict in the Middle East, forcing some carriers to increase fees to cover rising energy costs.

Now, as a result of those soaring energy costs, it looks like one carrier has decided to end all of its flights to one key U.S. airport.

Fuel Prices Surge

Global oil prices have spiked following Israeli and U.S. strikes on Iran, pushing fuel costs sharply higher for airlines around the world.

The fighting has disrupted the global oil supply chain, especially near the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage that handles 30% of the world's crude oil traffic.

Before the first strikes on Iran on Feb. 28, oil was trading below $60 per barrel. It's since surged past $100 and has stayed above that mark for over a week.

Jet fuel costs have climbed right along with it. The Associated Press reports that jet fuel prices have jumped more than 85% since the Iran war began on Feb. 28. By Tuesday, the average price for a gallon of jet fuel hit $4.64, up from $2.50 the day before the conflict started.

With the conflict showing no signs of letting up, prices could keep rising in the weeks and months to come.

Air Canada Ends Service to JFK

John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City is one of the busiest and most significant airports in the country, especially when it comes to international flights. However, it sounds like Air Canada has decided that it will not be flying into the airport for the next several months.

On Friday, Air Canada announced that it would be suspending its service to JFK for the next five months as a result of the rising fuel costs across the globe.

"As jet fuel prices have doubled since the start of the Iran conflict and some lower profitability routes and flights are no longer economic, and we are making schedule adjustments accordingly," an Air Canada spokesperson said on Friday, via NBC4.

Air Canada's service from Toronto and Montreal to JFK will cease on June 1 and resume on Oct. 25. However, it's worth noting that service to the New York metropolitan area's two other airports - LaGuardia and Newark - will continue.

Air Canada says it will reach out to customers who are impacted by the suspension with alternate travel options, which could include either of the two other airports in the region.
