Environmental Air Systems spends $56.7 million to buy Browns Summit campus

Environmental Air Systems LLC, a manufacturer of HVAC infrastructure, has paid $56.74 million to purchase its Browns Summit headquarters campus.

According to a Guilford County Register of Deeds filing, EAS purchased the 52.97-acre tract at 5955 Summit Ave. from SL Greensboro LLC of Basking Ridge, N.J., and KRE Reedy Fork II Investor LLC of Jersey City, N.J.

EAS officials could not be immediately reached for comment on the purchase.

EAS is a subsidiary of Comfort Systems USA Inc. It makes specialized prefabricated equipment for mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems in critical facilities.

The company has had a presence in the Triad since 1953, primarily in High Point.

In November, EAS said it would create 300 jobs in Asheboro as part of a $20 million expansion to add a new sub-assembly production operation at 300,000 square feet.

The company will lease the former Klaussner Furniture facilities at 4402 U.S. 220 South owned by Schwarz Properties. The $20 million capital investment will involve building renovations, machinery and equipment.

The new EAS facility will produce sub-assemblies for industries including mission-critical, pharmaceutical, data center, semiconductor and healthcare. It will serve regional and national markets.

The average annual wage for the 300 jobs is projected at $55,133 by the Randolph County Economic Development Corp.

The manufacturer has been made eligible for up to $3.29 million in performance-based incentives over 12 years from the state's Job Development Investment Grant program.

Performance-based local incentives include $297,000 from Asheboro City Council and $209,000 from Randolph County Board of Commissioners, along with a potential $500,000 state Building Reuse grant.
