1974 No. 1 Hit That Turned a Tender Love Song Into an Enduring Soft Rock Classic
Perhaps most fittingly for John Denver, his most globally successful song was his purest declaration of love in his soft, dreamy discography.
Although "Take Me Home, Country Roads," is the late musician's most commercially successful record, "Annie's Song" scored international recognition, thanks in part to its sweet, sweeping sound that transcends borders, languages, and later on, generations - becoming the star's signature track.
Written in 1973 for Denver's then-wife, Annie Martell Denver, the song was inspired by a trip to Aspen, Colorado, where the heavenly view atop the ski lift above the mountains prompted the artist to think about Annie, during what was then the end of a highly tumultuous time in their relationship, when the rift healed and their love was stronger than ever.
"It was written after John and I had gone through a pretty intense time together and things were pretty good for us," Martell later recalled (per American Songwriter).
"He left to go skiing and he got on the Ajax chair on Aspen Mountain, and the song just came to him. He skied down and came home and wrote it down…Initially it was a love song and it was given to me through him, and yet for him it became a bit like a prayer."
Perhaps it was the prominent inclusion of nature in these lyrics, inspired by Denver's time out in the elements, that re-energized the musician and prompted him to write what would eventually become a #1 hit in U.S. and Canada, and, in a first for the singer, a chart-topper in the UK and Ireland, as well as respectable chart success in South Africa and Australia.
Shifting slightly away from the American-centric country sound Denver was known for, the sweet, folk-influenced sound, combined with the lyrics, flying across the ocean, desert, forest, and mountains, was a proclamation of love with universal appeal.
