'Project Hail Mary' LEGO Launch Into Stratosphere Breaks Record

The Hail Mary just took flight. A LEGO set of the spaceship from the mega-hit Ryan Gosling-led film Project Hail Mary was recently launched into the Earth's stratosphere. Per Space.com, it soared to "an altitude of 114, 790 feet" by way of a stratospheric balloon, breaking a Guinness World Record for "highest altitude launch and retrieval of a LEGO kit."

The launch occurred on March 20 from Gwynedd County in the United Kingdom as a promotional tool to market the movie. Distributor Sony Pictures Releasing UK partnered with Sent Into Space to complete the achievement. Figurines of Ryland Grace and Rocky were aboard the LEGO Hail Mary as it flew into the stratosphere.

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who co-directed Project Hail Mary, received a Guinness World Records certificate on April 13 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Chris Rose, the head of projects for Sent Into Space, had this to say regarding Hail Mary's record-breaking launch:

"Every one of our projects is an exciting undertaking, but getting the chance to incorporate a LEGO build into the spacecraft development process made this one a whole heap of fun for the entire Sent Into Space team."

Based on the titular 2021 novel by Andy Weir, Project Hail Mary follows a science teacher, played by Gosling, who wakes up in a space vessel with no recollection of who he is. Light-years from home, he strikes an unlikely friendship amid trying to prevent a mysterious substance from causing the Sun to die out. The sci-fi comedy epic stars Gosling, Sandra Hüller, James Ortiz, Lionel Boyce, Milana Vayntrub, and Ken Leung. Miller and Lord directed from a screenplay by Drew Goddard.

The Project Hail Mary LEGO set is for builders ages 18 and up, and consists of 830 pieces. Unfortunately, it's sold out on the LEGO site, but you can be notified when it's back in stock.
