The Behind-the-Scenes Routine Quietly Powering Anthony Edwards' Playoff Push
Anthony Edwards is leaving no stone unturned when it comes to day-to-day recovery this season. When comparing his routine in year 6 versus his rookie year, he says it is "night and day."
In a video on his YouTube channel, Edwards and Minnesota Timberwolves VP of Performance Therapy David Hines give an inside look at what it takes to maintain peak condition throughout a long season.
Hines and Edwards use techniques like blood flow restriction, Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation, and general massage work. Edwards says the blood flow restriction in particular helped him overcome nagging knee pain early in his career. And while it's his least favorite technique, he knows it's what's best for him.
Edwards missed 21 games late this season, but worked extra hard in his rehab to be ready for the playoffs. While it is clear he is still not 100 percent, his underdog Timberwolves are currently giving the Denver Nuggets all they can handle.
From a diet perspective, nutrient-dense foods are a major part of the Ant menu. He drinks smoothies high in antioxidants like berries to ward off illness and support recovery. Other foods he commonly eats include barbecue chicken, rice, broccoli, and steak. There is also the Ant Special: extra crispy bacon, scrambled eggs, and cheese on an English muffin, a meal he is very particular about.
When it comes to lifting, the goals are dynamic. Prior to the season, Edwards wanted to add strength to improve his finishing ability at the rim and absorb contact. As the season progressed, the goal shifted to lighter work with an emphasis on recovery. You can't be overly sore and pushing for PRs when nearing the playoffs.
It's clear that Anthony Edwards is not just resting on his natural talents. He puts in the work 24/7 to add to his game, optimize his diet, and use every recovery modality available to him. With the Timberwolves hoping to make a deep playoff run, Edwards' commitment to his body could prove to be the deciding factor in how far Minnesota goes. If his work ethic off the court is any indication, Ant is just getting started.
