41-Year-Old LeBron James Turns Back the Clock in Shocking Comeback
With 25 seconds left, a 3 point lead, and possession of the ball, the Houston Rockets were in prime position to close out game 3 at home.
LeBron James had other ideas.
After forcing a steal on Reed Sheppard, James hit the game-tying three pointer. The Rockets would then miss, with James securing the rebound and calling timeout. With just 1.2 seconds left on the clock, LeBron nearly hit a miraculous turnaround shot as time expired.
Thanks to some clutch shooting from Marcus Smart in overtime, the Lakers prevailed to take a commanding 3-0 series lead.
In total, LeBron played 45 minutes and put up 29 points, 13 rebounds, 6 assists, and 3 steals. He appeared to be fading late as the Rockets took command, but the 41-year-old found another gear and helped his team claw back to victory.
It's easy to take these moments for granted, given all of his career accomplishments. But what LeBron is doing is unprecedented. The Lakers are without Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, their top two scorers on the season. It's not as if LeBron can fade into the background and pick his spots. He has carried the Lakers in a series where many pundits thought they had no chance.
In his post-game interview you could clearly tell he was exhausted. When asked if he's feeling good, LeBron smiled and replied, "Hell no, but that's how you're supposed to feel after a playoff game."
Throughout the series, LeBron is averaging 25.3 ppg on 47% shooting and 44% 3pt shooting, which is remarkably efficient given his workload. It's not hyperbole to say that what he is doing, given his age, is one of the most impressive athletic feats of all time.
Only time will tell how far LeBron can take the Lakers in a tough Western Conference. But in moments like these, it's important to step back and appreciate what we are witnessing.
