A Massive Third-Party RPG is Coming to Switch 2
For years, Nintendo's consoles have had a hard time getting third-party games released on them. The lack of graphical power and Nintendo's focus on their own properties saw the GameCube, Wii, Wii U, and Switch miss out on huge games that gamers were experiencing on Microsoft and Sony's hardware.
That's starting to change with the power of the Switch 2. Nintendo's current console is finally fit for third-party consumption, and an old developer friend is more than ready to start working with them much more.
Square Enix is releasing Final Fantasy XIV Online for Switch 2, a MMORPG that came out in 2013 for the PlayStation 3 and Windows and has been released on several different platforms throughout the last 13 years.
The game will come to Nintendo's console with a seperate subscription from the rest of the console versions. People who already have a subscription to a different version of the game can access the Switch 2 version for half-off. The game will be released in August, but there isn't a specific date in that month yet.
This is the second big Final Fantasy title ported to Switch 2. Final Fantasy VII Remake was ported to the console in January of this year.
The Final Fantasy series was a Nintendo exclusive throughout most of the 1980s and 1990s. It started becoming associated with PlayStation 2 during the 2000s, and Nintendo has has a hard time getting the popular RPG epic back in its fold. It's wonderful to see Square Enix and Nintendo strengthening their relationship.
Nintendo's access to third-party ports has been so much better during the Switch 2 era. Elden Ring is expected on the Switch 2 sometime in 2026. Cyberpunk 2077 was a launch title for the Switch 2 back in June 2025. It used to be unfathomable for Nintendo's hardware to host these types of games.

Nintendo will still be largely focused on its own franchises, obviously. Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is the biggest game coming out in May. Rhythm Heaven Groove will come out in July. Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave is still expected to come out before the end of the year.
