Rumored James Bond Release Date Window Is a Historic First

When producers Harry Saltzman and Albert R. Broccoli began making the James Bond films in the early 1960s, their goal was ambitious: to make at least one new James Bond movie every other year. For a while, from 1962 to 1965, there was a new 007 flick every year, including the first four films: Dr. No, From Russia with Love, Goldfinger, and Thunderball. This made the two-year gap between Thunderball (1965) and You Only Live Twice (1967), at the time, a big deal. After that, the Bond franchise endured a few more gaps between movies, but now, according to new rumors, the gap between No Time to Die and the still-untitled Bond 26 will be the longest ever in the history of the franchise. (Though 2026 does have a lot of non-movie Bond events!)

According to a new "movie insider" tip from The Sun, the next James Bond movie won't hit theaters "until 2028." The unnamed tipster also noted: "Denis [Villeneuve] wanted a long break after Dune 3 and has some broad ideas on the [Bond 26] script. Steven [Knight] will get on with drafts before they map out the final version. That'll take at least the whole summer...Realistically, if they can make January 2027 work for pre-production, then that will be a success."

In some ways, this news isn't shocking. Although this is an unverified source from tabloid reporting, this timeline checks out with what most experts have known for a while. Once Villeneuve was named as the director, Dune 3 had to be completed before real work could begin on Bond 26.

Still, with 2028 a likely release date for Bond 26, this gap represents the longest time ever in the history of Bond movies that there's been a gap this big. From 1974's The Man With the Golden Gun to 1977's The Spy Who Loved Me, three years was then viewed as a long time. Ditto 1989's Licence to Kill to 1995's GoldenEye, a six-year gap, and major retooling for the Bond franchise. That said, there was also a six-year gap between 2015's Spectre and its direct sequel, 2021's No Time to Die; but that delay had less to do with behind-the-scenes changes and more to do with the 2020 pandemic.

So, when Bond 26 does hit theaters, it will be historic in several ways: It will feature the second new cinematic Bond actor of the 21st century, and the first new man playing Bond in over 20 years. It will be the first major film since 1962 (not counting 1983's Never Say Never Again) not produced by any member of the Broccoli family. And, of course, it will be the longest wait between Bond films since 1989.

Will the wait be worth it? All signs point toward a hopeful Bond future. Villeneuve is a huge fan of the franchise, and most everyone agrees that Peaky Blinders proves that Knight understands what makes Bond tick. So, when Bond 26 does hit screens, it will likely be the most thoroughly developed and carefully planned film in the franchise in a very long time.
