Moneymaker: Greensboro couple turns folded cash bouquets into flourishing flower shop
A Greensboro couple that makes bouquets from folded dollar bills is literally in the money.
"Somebody just drove two hours. She came all the way from Virginia," Josselyn Muñoz said last week about the money bouquets. "She took five of them."
Josselyn Muñoz and Marvin Gil are partners in Crafts by J&M, a floral shop in the Four Seasons Town Centre in Greensboro.
The couple specializes in making Ramo Buchon, a large hand-tied bouquet. At Crafts by J&M, the two most popular are money bouquets, bouquets made from folded dollar bills, and eternal bouquets comprised of handmade satin roses.
One of the busiest days of the year for the store is approaching: Mother's Day.
"This Mother's Day, we expect to make probably about 200 natural rose arrangements, stack as many money bouquets as we can, as many eternal roses as we can," Gil said.
The duo began the business making crafts in the basement and living room of Muñoz's house.
"We used to work in her living room for special occasions," Gil said. "Like for Valentine's and Mother's Day, we used to basically use her whole house, and even her family used to work for us during the special occasions."
The two were just 17 when they started. Making the money bouquets and eternal bouquets was a side hustle. They would eventually rent a small space on the second floor of the Four Seasons Town Centre.
Now, they are 22 and renting a larger space on the first floor at Four Seasons Town Centre.
Gil said part of the reason they got into the business of Ramo Buchon bouquets was that they felt the tradition was dying and wanted to keep it alive.
"That tradition of giving flowers to your girlfriend, to your wife, to your fiancé, like nobody was doing that no more," Gil said. "Then it just became so popular that if you search in Greensboro, if you search in any other state, you're going to find a lot of people making them (Ramo Buchon). And that's why on the special occasions when you go out, you're going to see a lot of couples with the special roses, money bouquets, eternal roses, everything."
The top seller at the store is the money bouquets, which are made with cash. The cost of the bouquets varies by size.
The biggest money Bouquets hold $182 and are sold for $399. The smallest ones hold around $30 and are sold for $65.
Also popular are eternal bouquets filled with handmade satin roses. They are called 'eternal' because they don't need water like real roses do and can last forever.
The eternal rose bouquets range from $130 for the smallest bouquets to $240 for the largest.
Muñoz said the reason the smaller eternal rose bouquets are more expensive than the smaller money bouquets is that they take longer to make.
"You need 14 petals to put a rose together, so it takes a lot of time," Muñoz said.
The store also sells live flower arrangements.
Additionally, the store also sells plush stuffed animals. Gil said the store aims to stock huge Teddy Bears, which are hard to find at similar stores.
