LIV Golf Reschedules Louisiana Event After Funding Issues
Earlier this month reports speculated that LIV Golf was coming to an abrupt close after running into funding shortages after the Saudi Public Investment Fund pulled its future funding.
However, LIV Golf CEO Scott O'Neil challenged that notion when he revealed the league was fully-funded through the rest of the 2026 season.
"The reality is you're funded through the season and then you work like crazy as a business to create a business and a business plan to keep us going," he said. "But that's not different from any other private equity-funded business in the history of man."
LIV Golf Might Not Actually Be Fully Funded
While O'Neil suggested the league was fully-funded through the end of the season, there seems to be a slight problem. On Monday night, The Athletic reported Secretary of Louisiana Economic Development Susan Bourgeois publicly reached out to O'Neil in the days after the PIF pulled funding for the league.
"Bourgeois and O'Neil spoke on Friday, according to a source with knowledge of the conversation, and agreed to postpone the June 25 event due to LIV Golf's changing business model," The Athletic wrote.
The state of Louisiana was reportedly slated to spend nearly $7 million of state money to bring LIV to New Orleans' Bayou Oaks in City Park. Roughly $2 million was expected to go toward course improvements and another $5 million for hosting fees.
"The state has clawback provisions in the deal, and according to the source, the two parties agreed that LIV will return the $1.2 million already received while treating the $2 million spent on Bayou Oaks as an acceptable improvement to a state asset," The Athletic noted.
An announcement regarding the postponement is expected on Tuesday. The event could be rescheduled for the fall, according to the report.
