Top 10 Video Games Releasing in May 2026
While it seems impossible, the passage of time stops for no one, and it continues to pick up steam as we're already heading into the fifth month of 2026. It's not ideal for those creeping feelings of mortality, but at least there's a fresh assortment of games to distract us from that blooming existential crisis. To help stave off the darkness, here are my top 10 video games that are coming out in May:
10) Blueberry
A story-driven puzzle platformer about confronting trauma. While not exactly light fare, it has an interesting look and, if done well, could deliver some emotional gaming.
9) Outbound
A cozy game that simulates the fun aspects of a road trip, presumably without all the drawbacks like traffic, intestinal distress, and actually interacting with other people. It looks like a mellow time and serves to remind me it's been too long since I settled in with a good cozy game.
8) Hydroneer
Released on Steam six years ago, Hydroneer has racked up nearly 20,000 reviews, most of them positive, as PC gamers have enjoyed the mining and base-building gameplay.
7) Call of the Elder Gods
A sequel to the 2020 adventure puzzler Call of the Sea, Call of the Elder Gods promises another Lovecraftian narrative puzzle adventure. I checked out the original on Game Pass and largely enjoyed it. Let's hope for more of the same from its successor.
6) Yoshi and the Mysterious Book
It's been more than seven years since we got a mainline Yoshi game, and this one doubles as a Switch 2 exclusive. Nintendo rarely misses with its first-party releases, so expect some solid platforming in an adorable package.
5) Mixtape
I'm all in with the concept of Mixtape, a 1980s-inspired "coming-of-age" game built around a soundtrack that features a lot of well-known bands. I've been fooled by Annapurna Interactive before, though-I'm looking at you right now, Twelve Minutes-so I'll be maintaining a wait-and-see approach.
4) Directive 8020
Developer Supermassive Games is the studio behind Until Dawn and The Quarry, a couple of flawed but fun interactive horror games. Its newest venture, Directive 8020, takes that concept to space, generating Alien, Event Horizon, and The Thing vibes. If done right, Directive 8020 has a very high ceiling.
3) Forza Horizon 6
If I had to bet my life savings on one game on this list being really good, I'd go with Forza Horizon 6. Playground Games has done nothing but deliver with the Forza Horizon series, and switching the locale to Japan seems like a slam dunk.
2) LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight
While LEGO games tend to be a safe bet as well, all signs point to Legacy of the Dark Knight scaling back some of its predecessor's signature elements (like oodles of playable characters) while adding a bit more emphasis on gameplay. Sounds good. It also doesn't hurt that it's set to draw from so many versions of Batman.
1) 007 First Light
Everything I've seen from IO Interactive, the developer of the Hitman series, has reassured me that 007 is in the right hands. As a big James Bond fan, I cannot wait for my license to kill to arrive on May 27. Starts humming the Bond theme…
