Sometimes the most unexpected bonds come from the hardest moments. After losing her own kittens, one mama cat named Nash was given a second chance at nurturing-this time with two orphaned baby squirrels who suddenly needed a mother.

What happens next in @hobbyfarmlife22's April 21st video is as tender as it is surprising. The grieving cat accepts her new babies without hesitation and begins caring for them as if they were her own. It's the kind of moment that reminds you just how powerful maternal instinct and compassion can be.

Nash is such an attentive mama, and that's exactly what the little squirrels need to thrive. She couldn't care less if two of her babies look a little bit different! After tragically losing her two eldest kittens to the hobby farm's resident pig (who was only trying to protect her own babies), this grieving mother has enough love and milk to go around.

"Wait, do squirrels drink milk?" one commenter asked. "I have so many questions." They certainly aren't the only one wondering about the logistics of this arrangement.

The farmer revealed, "They can be supplemented with puppy formula if needed. So far, they have not needed it. That is what they were originally being fed when found."

According to the Wildlife Guardians of Ontario, Esbilac Powder Milk Replacer for puppies is the most nutritious formula for orphaned baby squirrels. Once they reach 6 weeks of age, some solids can be introduced. So even if the rescued squirrels aren't actually drinking Nash's milk as the main source of nutrients, they do rely on her (and their kitten siblings) for warmth, comfort, and bonding.

Unlikely Animal Friends Becoming Family

This emotional animal video gives viewers a priceless glimpse into the life of a mama cat and her adopted baby squirrels, but it also reminds everyone that blood isn't the only thing that makes a family. Unlikely animal friends like Kurtsie the zebra and Bakari the giraffe may be different species, but they're still cornerstones in one another's lives. After all, friends can be the family that you choose!
