Spirit Airlines Announces Clear Decision on How to Get Ticket Refunds

Spirit Airlines has shut down for good, but what happens to passengers who are holding tickets? The airline, in its final message, announced a clear decision about that; passengers can get a refund.

"It is with great disappointment that Spirit Airlines has started winding down its global operations, effective immediately," a Spirit post read at 1:35 a.m. on May 2, 2026.

"All flights have been cancelled, and customer service is no longer available. While we are not able to help rebook your flight on another airline, we will automatically process refunds for any flights purchased through Spirit with a credit or debit card to the original form of payment. We are proud of the impact of our ultra-low-cost model on the industry for the last 33 years and had hoped to serve our Guests for many years to come."

Spirit Airlines Posted Ticket Refund Instructions on Its Website

Spirit Airlines posted further instructions for passengers on its website, writing, "Spirit Guests should not go to the airport. For more information regarding your refund status and next steps, please visit our Guests page."

However, some passengers holding tickets that they obtained through a voucher, credit or Free Spirit points won't qualify for an immediate refund, Spirit noted.

That page contains a list of links and notes, "While we are not able to help rebook your flight on another airline, we will automatically process refunds for any flights purchased through Spirit with a credit or debit card to the original form of payment. Guests who booked flights via a travel agent should contact the travel agent directly to request a refund. Compensation for Guests who booked flights using any other methods, including a voucher, credit or Free Spirit points, will be determined at a later date through the bankruptcy court process."

Spirit also added, "Spirit is unfortunately not able to reimburse Guests for incidental travel costs associated with cancelled trips. If you purchased travel insurance, check with your carrier to see if these expenses may be covered under your plan."

Meanwhile, other airlines are stepping in. "If Spirit's shutdown affected your travel plans, we're here to help," Delta wrote on X. "We're offering reduced, nonrefundable rescue fares for the next five days across domestic routes (nonstop and one-stop via our hubs) and routes between the U.S. & Latin America."

"If your travel has been impacted, American Airlines is offering rescue fares in Main Cabin on select routes to help Spirit customers reach their destination," American Airlines wrote.

Spirit Airlines Also Posted Instructors for Vendors

What about Vendors with the now-defunct airline? "We valued our relationship with you and had hoped to work with you for many years to come. We are committed to working with our vendors through the wind-down process and will be in touch in the coming days to discuss next steps," Spirit wrote on its website.

"Any outstanding claims will need to be addressed through the bankruptcy process. Please be advised that you will receive direct communications from the Court regarding that process."
