Pregnant German Shepherd Mix Saved From Euthanasia - and Her Reaction Is Unforgettable
Many dogs in shelters are rescued right before they are set to be euthanized. Unfortunately, some stray canines face this fate due to overcrowding in shelters. Thankfully, animal lovers often step in just in time to give these dogs a chance at a new life.
This German Shepherd was carrying a litter of puppies yet still about to be euthanized when a kind-hearted young man came to her rescue.

Animal advocate Joey Graceffa shared the story of the mama dog, whom he saw on the euthanasia list at his local shelter. He immediately sprang into action to bring her home.
The precious pooch was huddled in her kennel when Joey arrived. Her large belly made it clear that her litter would be born very soon. The stress in her sweet eyes was clearly visible as she nervously left the shelter.
As soon as he brought her back to his house, she cowered in the corner out of fear.
"You could just tell she had a lot of anxiety and she had clearly been through a lot in her life," Graceffa remarked as he tried carefully petting the pooch. "Earning her trust is going to take some work but I'm up for the challenge."
After giving her a gentle wash, Graceffa let her explore the backyard in the hopes of helping her feel more secure.
Why Rescued Dogs Take Time to Feel Safe
After some time smelling the grass and calmly wandering around Grafecca's yard, the mom-to-be began to slowly decompress. She even allowed him to pet her and gave him some kisses. The ultimate sign that she was beginning to trust was when she rolled on her back and showed her belly. The precious pooch finally felt at home.
Rescue dogs need plenty of time and patience to adjust to a new environment. Many animal welfare organizations go by the 3-3-3 rule:

- First 3 days - Most rescue dogs are overwhelmed by their new environment and can seem anxious, overly cautious, standoffish, or even shut down. This is not their true personality - they just need time to adapt to their new surroundings, especially if they've experienced trauma in the past.
- 3 weeks - Many dogs will start coming out of their shell during this phase, especially if a routine has been established. They feel safe with structure and knowing what to expect, which helps to build trust and bond with family members.
- 3 months - At the 3-month mark, most rescue dogs will feel at home and have a solid foundation of trust with their family. With a set routine and lots of love and affection, these canine cuties finally understand they are loved and safe.
This German Shepherd is a beautiful example of how these rescue dogs can flourish if given a chance. Her gentle and loving personality shows that she will be a wonderful mother to those pups.
