In the rare moment, the bird gathered enough food for her baby before she fed the newborn, next to an unhatched egg. How Hummingbirds Feed Their Babies

According to the Missouri Department of Conservation, baby Hummingbirds have to feed more often than you think.

In fact, mother Hummingbirds feed their babies "often every 20 minutes, to fuel their rapid growth." This is because of their high metabolism and the fast heart rates that these special birds are known for. In fact, experts from Kingsyard Bird Feeder's blog reported that a Hummingbird's metabolism is "nearly 100 times faster than what elephants could do."

The blog also shared that babies can also be fed up to "1-2 times an hour for 10 hours a day."

"Baby hummingbirds are incapable of feeding themselves within a few weeks of their life," they shared in their post. "They need their mothers to feed them with higher protein and lower sugar for their growth. Not only will their mothers feed them on insects, but they also use their beaks to funnel mixtures down their babies' throats."

The Department of Conservation also shared that "Even after the chicks leave the nest, the female will continue to feed them for a short time as they learn to forage for themselves."
