Nintendo Just Revived a Classic Franchise With a Massive June 2026 Game Announcement
After at least a month of rabid rumors circling all over social media, Nintendo has finally confirmed one of the worst-kept secrets in the industry: Star Fox is coming to the Switch 2!
Fox McCloud and his group of anthropomorphic galactic fighters make up one of the most beloved franchises in retro gaming history, but the characters have been shelved and mostly ignored for the last decade. Fox made a major cameo in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie last month, and that was the catalyst for his reemergence into the video game scene with a new entry in his own series.

Star Fox will be released on the Switch 2 on June 25, 2026. The above gameplay trailer was shown during the Nintendo Direct on Wednesday night, in which Shigeru Miyamoto reintroduced the characters and gameplay to the fans on a livestream.
The game is going to be a direct remake of Star Fox 64 from the Nintendo 64. That game was already remade for the Nintendo 3DS in 2011. This new version of Star Fox has all-new character models, voice acting, and revamped graphics that transport gamers to modern versions of the classic levels from the famous 1997 classic.
The decision to release a third iteration of the same game might rub some longtime fans the wrong way. Star Fox has always been a cult franchise, certainly not on the level of popularity of Super Mario or The Legend of Zelda. This means that Nintendo is banking on bringing in droves of new fans who may have seen the character in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie last month and are not familiar with any of Fox's games from the past.
Veteran fans who have already played both of the previous versions of the game will have to hope that this title is successful enough to allow Nintendo more ambition in future releases.
Previous Star Fox games that differed from the series' main focus were Star Fox Adventures and Star Fox: Assault on the GameCube. Both of these games had mixed results in both sales and critical reception. They could possibly both appear on the Nintendo Switch Online service to get fans hyped up for the Star Fox game on Switch 2.
