Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr Release the First-Ever Duet Between Two Beatles
Sir Paul McCartney has released the second single from his upcoming album, The Boys of Dungeon Lane - with the help of none other than fellow Beatle and knight, Ringo Starr, also known as Sir Richard Starkey.
"Home to Us," a duet between Paul and Ringo, is the first-ever duet between two Beatles outside the iconic band, which formed in 1960 and disbanded in 1970. While the pair have collaborated multiple times and recorded together on occasion since the Beatles' break-up, namely in McCartney's 1984 movie endeavour, Give My Regards to Broad Street, this is the first time two members have recorded a straightforward duet as the main featured vocalists. Paul and Ringo's bandmates, George Harrison and John Lennon, died in 2001 and 1980, respectively.
The Boys of Dungeon Lane, an ode to the Liverpool origins and boyhood of the now 83-year-old McCartney, was calling out for a feature with the fellow Scouser, according to a recent interview with Paul at Abbey Road Studios.
"I made the song around that idea and sent it to Ringo," McCartney said during the interview (obtained via Rolling Stone). "He sent me back a version where he just added some lines to the chorus, so I thought, maybe he doesn't like it. I rang him, and he said he thought I only wanted him to sing one or two lines, and I said I'd love to hear him sing the whole thing. So we took my first line, Ringo's second line, and then we had a duet. We'd never done that before."
The song also features some fellow musicians in backing vocals. "I had the idea it would be nice to hear girls," McCartney continued. "Chrissie Hynde said she'd do it, and Sharleen Spiteri, they're mates. So they did it."
