Bringing home a new puppy is an exciting time. Like the first signs of spring or sunshine poking through a wall of clouds, these little souls are perfect in every way-unless you're the resident dog who never asked for a younger sibling and isn't entirely sure you're happy about the newest bundle of joy.

This is what Willow, the Cavapoo, recently had to sort out when she joined Mom on a fun adventure that turned out to be picking up her new puppy brother, Coast. Willow's reaction is every eldest kid everywhere!

The snowwhite Cavapoo pup looks like an angel as he chills out in Mom's lap. Sweet Willow stays back, observing and assessing this troubling new development in her life. She may not have wanted a sibling and isn't thrilled about sharing attention and resources with another pooch, but I'm sure with time, they'll be fast friends (... maybe...)!

The adoption happened back in mid-April, but we appreciate Mom sharing where it all began. And it looks like I'm right: Willow and Coast just needed a bit to adjust to their new life together because now, these adorable siblings are inseparable!

I love a happy ending, especially when it's one where the resident dog eventually welcomes and accepts a new pup bud. Three days is all it took for Willow to see that Coast isn't coming to steal her thunder-he's there to shine bright with her. Look at how precious they are together!

I was worried… but I think they're gonna be just fine they are equally fun and playful with each other as they are chill and looking out for each other. #cavapoo#cavapoosoftiktok#cavapoos#cavapoopuppy#willowandcoast

Helping Your Dog Adjust to a New Sibling

I've been in the Cavapoo mom's shoes, but it wasn't so smooth for my Corgi to adjust to our senior rescue Staffy. In fact, it's taken years for her to barely accept that he's not going anywhere. Even then, she's quick to correct him or guard her things.

It takes patience and time to help your dog adjust to a new sibling, and it's important to start slowly, having them first meet in a neutral place while supervised, to avoid one becoming territorial. You don't want to force interaction and keep them leashed.

Equally important, stick to your dog's usual routines. Also, give them plenty of praise and treats for good behavior around the newbie so they begin to associate the other dog with good things. It's normal for one or both to feel overwhelmed and overstimulated, so giving them separate spaces to escape (a bed, crate, room, etc.) is crucial.

Willow passed all these tests with flying colors. Coast is so lucky to have such a great big sister!
