What's Really Behind Planet Fitness' Surprising Sales Slump

The phrase New Year New You did not come to fruition for Planet Fitness.

The company experienced worse-than-expected sales in Q1 of this year, leading to a plummet in their stock price last week. They've even postponed a planned price increase for their Black Card members, the highest in their membership tier hierarchy.

Planet Fitness also adjusted their expected yearly sales growth, going from 9% to 7%.

Planet Fitness originally made their mark by being one of the most affordable gyms out there. Low monthly rates and sign-up fees were appealing to potential members. Their motto "The Judgment Free Zone" was also designed to make the gym a comfortable environment for beginners.

But if the numbers are any indication, this just isn't enough anymore. Nowadays, gyms with better equipment and amenities also have competitive pricing. The idea of the gym being an intimidating place, even for someone new, is overblown as well.

By positioning yourself as a beginner-friendly place, you also potentially lose the intermediate-to-advanced lifter. Planet Fitness isn't seen as a place where you can get a good workout, due to the limited equipment and free weights.

The writing may have been on the wall for a while. Social media has completely changed how people approach fitness. Gym-goers now want top-tier equipment, saunas, cold plunges, and an environment worth posting about. Planet Fitness simply doesn't offer that experience, and no amount of affordability can make up for it.

We'll see if Planet Fitness pivots their business approach and marketing, or if they see this as a minor bump in the road. At some point, being the cheapest option in the room stops being a competitive advantage and starts being a liability. If Planet Fitness can't find a way to evolve their model, the stock drop may just be the beginning.
