Red Macaw Looks Right at Home on Horseback Like a True Cowboy
Macaws are already one of the most dramatic animals on planet Earth. They're loud, flashy, opinionated, and built like they should either be giving a TED Talk or running a small but chaotic government. So the second one decides horseback riding is part of his lifestyle, it somehow feels both completely ridiculous and perfectly on-brand.
That is exactly what happens in this video.
@thegaysiancowboy My Roomate's #macaw loves to ride the horses. He will fly over and land on them all on his own . The horses don't seem to mind. #parrots#birdsoftiktok#parrotsoftiktok#parrotslover
Middle of Nowhere - Kacey Musgraves
The caption explains that the roommate's Macaw loves to ride the horses and will actually fly over and land on them by himself, which is already an outrageous level of confidence. The best part is that the horses don't seem bothered by it at all. They are just out there accepting this feathered little cowboy as if this is a completely normal ranch arrangement and not something that sounds made up by a 6-year-old with excellent instincts.
And honestly, the Macaw looks right at home.
That is what makes the clip so funny. He's not clinging on awkwardly or acting unsure. He looks settled. Like he has done this before. Like he has somewhere to be, and the horse is simply today's ride. One comment says, "He's a cowboy " and yes, that's the correct reading. Not a passenger. Not a guest. A cowboy.
There's something especially great about animals behaving as if they have quietly built entire side careers without telling us. This Macaw clearly has a whole horse-guy alter ego, and the horses seem to have accepted him into the operation with very little fuss. That calmness from the horses somehow makes it even better. No one is overreacting. The bird lands. The horse keeps horsing. The internet loses its mind.
The video feels like an accidental children's book. Big horse, bright red bird, zero explanation, full commitment. And because the Macaw flies over and lands on them all on his own, it also has that extra layer of, oh, this is not a one-time weird moment. This is a choice. Repeatedly.
Which is somehow even funnier.
Why Some Birds Like Riding on Larger Animals
Birds like Macaws are curious, social, and often drawn to movement, height, and familiar routines, especially when they feel safe. A confident Macaw may see a calm horse as both a good perch and an interesting part of the environment, but introductions like this should always be supervised carefully, so neither animal feels stressed or trapped. Humane World for Animals has helpful animal care resources, and the big takeaway is that even cute interspecies moments work best when everyone involved is calm and choosing the interaction.
This bird didn't just find a perch. He found a whole aesthetic.
