After 4 Years in a Shelter, This Lab Mix Still Isn't Sure Humans Will Be Kind

A Lab Mix named Buster is ready to find his forever home after being left in the shelter for four years.

In a TikTok video posted by Heber Springs Humane Society, the sweet dog sat, looking timid, as he waited to be adopted inside the shelter. His unique paw patterns also captured viewers' attention since they're speckled, while the rest of his fur is black.

In the caption, the organization revealed that Buster "spent 4 years watching the world from behind shelter walls."

"He's not the dog rushing up to greet you. He's the one hiding in the corner, unsure if people can really be kind," they shared. "The world has scared him for so long that he's forgotten what safety feels like."

While he seems very timid and scared, the shelter added that "underneath that fear is a gentle soul who deserves patience, love, and a chance to finally exhale."

The video touched people online, calling him a "sweet baby," and some even offered to adopt Buster and take him home. One user wrote, "Please someone who lives in the same city, adopt him!! Praying for his new life ."

"I'm so sorry that people have let you down, buddy," another said in the comments. "What a sweetheart ."

"I wish I were near because I would adopt him in a heartbeat," another user wrote. "He just needs some love, and he will open up."

How Long-Term Shelter Stays Affect Dogs

Shelter can be stressful for any dog, especially depending on the circumstances that led to their stay. But a long-term stay at the shelter can negatively affect a dog's personality and behavior in the long run.

According to Adoptapet.com, "A dog's length of stay often has little to do with their potential as a companion. Instead, factors such as breed stereotypes, size, age, and timing tend to play bigger roles."

Some of the reasons they stay longer in a shelter include age, breed, appearance, size, and even disability.

"Research suggests that shelter dogs have higher stress-hormone levels than dogs in homes, particularly during their first weeks in a shelter," Adoptapet.com explained. "In these conditions, even the most good-natured dogs can struggle to show their true personalities, and their stress responses are easily misread as behavioral issues or difficult temperaments."

While shelters can take steps to minimize these issues, a long-term stay can affect a dog's behavior, but that doesn't mean they aren't capable of being great pets.

If a pet parent decides to adopt a dog that's stayed at the shelter long-term, there are ways to help ease them into their new life, like "creating a quiet, low-traffic space where your dog can decompress and feel secure, using positive reinforcement to build trust and reward calm behavior," and plenty of training and patience.
