'What Happened to Kyle Busch?' Fans, NASCAR Stars Express Shock After Legend's Death

Top NASCAR stars are flooding social media with tributes to NASCAR legend Kyle Busch. However, his sudden and unexpected death is causing shocked fans to ask, "What happened?"

"Holy crap. What happened? This is terrible," a fan wrote on X. "From what?!....He was way too young! RIP Kyle. You will be missed," wrote shocked fan. "How does (a) 41 years old man die in literally 48 hours..." asked another page.

"People don't just die at 41. What happened?" wrote another person. It wasn't just regular fans. NASCAR stars also expressed shock and grief. Compounding the shock: Most fans learned shortly before his death that Busch, only 41, was hospitalized with an illness. But the illness, which was revealed by his X page on the morning of May 21, wasn't explained, and the cause of death hasn't been released either. On May 10, Busch was struggling with a sinus cold on the track, although it's not clear whether it is related to his death.

NASCAR Legends Like Dale Earnhardt Jr. & Denny Hamlin Released Statements: 'Absolutely Cannot Comprehend the News'

Racing great Denny Hamlin was among the stars posting tributes to Busch, who was only 41 when he died. "Absolutely cannot comprehend this news. We just need to think of his family during this time. We love you KB," wrote Hamlin on X.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. wrote on X, "Kyle and I had a really challenging existence for many years. But we luckily took the time to figure out our differences and that was something he instigated with a conversation in his bus around how we each managed our racing teams. I was super eager for us to get on better terms."

He added, "But it was he who made the effort for that to be possible. We did some media together also to laugh through some of the things we put each other through many years ago. Most recently we had even been discussing him running my Late Model at Wilkesboro this summer."

He continued, "He seemed extremely happy and we had planned to meet up next Thursday to get his seat to the shop. He laughed over the idea of his fans and JRM fans having to cheer in unison during that race. Kyle was one of the greatest drivers in NASCAR history. No one can deny that. But he was also a father, a husband, brother, son, and a friend to many. My heart is broken for the Busch family. I will never be able to make sense of this loss but I am thankful that we had found a way to become friends."

Brad Keselowski posted on X, "Absolute shock. Very hard to process. Hug your loved ones."

"At a loss for words. Thinking and praying for the entire Busch family. Godspeed my friend," wrote driver Connor Zilisch.

Driver Ricky Stenhouse Jr. also posted a tribute on X. "There aren't really words for today. I've raced against Kyle for a long time, and anyone who's lined up next to him knows exactly what made him special, he gave you everything he had, every single lap, and he made all of us better for it," he wrote. "But more than the wins and the records, I keep thinking about Samantha, Brexton, and Lennix, and the entire Busch family right now. That's where my heart is. Rest easy, Rowdy. The sport won't be the same without you."

A fan responded on Stenhouse's thread, "I'm just totally shocked! He will be missed. Prayers for his family."

NASCAR Confirmed Kyle Busch's Death, Declaring Sadness & Heartbreak

NASCAR wrote, "We are saddened and heartbroken to share the news of the passing of Kyle Busch, a two-time Cup champion and one of our sport's greatest and fiercest drivers. He was 41 years old. We extend our deepest condolences to the Busch family, Richard Childress Racing and the entire motorsports community."

His cause of death is not clear. The only thing that is clear is that Busch's X page posted about a mysterious illness that required hospitalization on May 21, and by nightfall, NASCAR was confirming that he was dead. Busch's X page revealed just before 9:30 a.m.: "Kyle has experienced a severe illness resulting in hospitalization. He is currently undergoing treatment and will not compete in any of his scheduled activities this weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway. We ask for understanding and privacy as our family navigates this situation."
