37 Years Ago Today: One of Canada's Most Most Chilling Unsolved Mysteries Began
Monday marks the grim 37-year anniversary of the start of Canada's most haunting and baffling unsolved mysteries.
Despite extensive media coverage, including a featured segment on NBC's legendary Unsolved Mysteries television show in 1991, authorities are no closer to solving this chilling case.
On May 25, 1989, a 44-year-old Canadian nurse named Cindy James went missing from her Metro Vancouver home in Richmond, British Columbia. But it was the events leading up to James' disappearance that added more horror and bewilderment to the case.
The search for the well-respected and beloved nurse ended in tragedy. James' body was discovered by a city worker on June 8th in the yard of an abandoned house.
James' hands and feet were tied up, and it was later determined that she had been drugged. The heartbreaking development then spawned speculation among investigators: Was she a victim of murder, or was it a suicide?
As documented on Unsolved Mysteries, James reported almost 100 cases of harassment over a seven-year period, including five physical attacks.
Police Couldn't Find Evidence to Support Cindy James' Claims Of Harassment
Neal Hall of the Vancouver Sun was interviewed by Unsolved Mysteries for the segment about Cindy James' mysterious death. Hall reported at the time that police never found a suspect, nor a fingerprint of a potential suspect, in the harassment and attacks on James.
According to Hall, multiple officers would surveil James' home, with no events. However, the harassment reportedly continued even after surveillance was removed. At this point, investigators were starting to believe that James, who had struggled with serious depression, was staging attacks against herself.
Hall also said that police had spent an estimated $1.5 million on the James investigation.
A coroner ruled that Cindy James died of an "unknown event." Fast forward to 2026, and the case remains as baffling now as it was 37 years ago.
