Is Tiger Woods Playing the U.S. Open, Open Championship? 15-Time Major Champion Makes Decision

Earlier this year Tiger Woods announced his decision to step away from the game of golf.

"I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today," the 15-time major champion said in a statement posted to his social media accounts. "I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritize my well-being and work toward lasting recovery.

"I'm committed to taking the time needed to return to a healthier, stronger, and more focused place, both personally and professionally. I appreciate your understanding and support, and ask for privacy for my family, loved ones and myself at this time."

The decision came after he was involved in another rollover car accident.

Woods eventually entered a treatment program and has, as he declared he would, stayed away from the game of golf. But golf fans continued to wonder if he'd be able to play in the U.S. Open next month or perhaps the Open Championship in August.

According to golf insider Bob Harig, Woods won't be competing in either tournament.

"For the second consecutive year, Tiger Woods will miss all of the season's major championships," Harig wrote. "Woods is not exempt for next month's U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills and he did not enter the British Open field by the close of entries last week, although the R&A has yet to release an official field list."

The 15-time major champion didn't tee it up in any of the four majors in 2025 after recovering from an Achilles tear and back surgery.

He hasn't made the cut at a major tournament since the 2024 Masters when he finished in solo-60th place. His last top-20 in a major came back in 2019 with his long-awaited 15th major victory at the Masters.
