28-Year-Old Athlete Dies of Hyperthemia After HYROX Lyon
A 28-year-old woman died over the weekend following a medical emergency while participating in HYROX Lyon, according to multiple French media outlets.
HYROX is a hybrid fitness competition, combining eight kilometers of running with eight functional exercise stations. Though it's known to be a grueling challenge, HYROX is marketed as being designed for all fitness levels. This past weekend's competition was held at Eurexpo Lyon during an intense and unprecedented heatwave.
The athlete reportedly collapsed on the track during one of the runs, suffering from hyperthermia during the competition. Hyperthermia is a heat-related illness where the body's internal temperature rises above its normal range, due to the body producing or absorbing more heat than it can dissipate.
Immediately, questions regarding temperatures within the convention center were raised. But the room was air-conditioned at a temperature falling somewhere between 64 and 68 degrees, an optimal humidity level between 65 and 70 percent, and water points "multiplied" along the course, according to Maxime Villalongue, the producer of HYROX France.
The young, trained athlete was transported to a local hospital by emergency responders on Sunday morning and later died following the incident.
"It's incomprehensible. Under these circumstances, we wonder how it's even possible," Villalongue said. "I think the athletes arrived there having either been outside in the sun for too long or hadn't drunk enough."
France saw several other heat-related emergencies and deaths over the same weekend. A 53-year-old man suffered a fatal heart attack during Paris' La Pyrénéenne footrace, while another road race in Maisons-Alfort left 16 people hospitalized and 10 in critical condition.
