Dark Urban Legend Behind 2026 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee's Biggest Hit Explained

Phil Collins is just one of the artists getting inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame later this year, 45 years the lead single from his debut solo album became one of the biggest hits of his career.

While on a break from band Genesis, Collins released solo project Face Value in February 1981, dropping "In the Air Tonight" as its lead single. With its impressive drum solo and haunting lyrics, the track was not only a smash hit for Collins at the time, but arguably became his most recognizable song of all time.

It's since been immortalized in the Grand Theft Auto video games, Cadbury commercials, and even one particularly memorable moment from The Hangover with Mike Tyson. A dark, tragic urban legend, however, has also surrounded the song for decades, an urban legend that was even referenced in the 2000 Eminem song ‘Stan.'

‘In the Air Tonight' Urban Legend Explained

While its origins are unclear, a popular urban legend about ‘In the Air Tonight' suggests the song was about a tragic incident Collins himself witnessed.

The most popular variation of the tale says Collins watched from afar as someone drowned, while another person close to the victim did nothing to help, essentially murdering them. According to legend, Collins didn't report the incident to authorities and instead wrote the song about the experience, before he later invited the killer to one of his concerts, pointed him out to the audience and performed the track.

As evidence to back up the wild-and very dark-story, fans point to the song's lyrics. Among the most telling: "Well, if you told me you were drowning I would not lend a hand", "I've seen your face before my friend, but I don't know if you know who I am," and "Well, I was there, and I saw what you did; I saw it with my own two eyes."

The lore became so popular that Eminem even referenced it in his 2000 song ‘Stan,' a song told from the perspective of an obsessive, unstable, and murderous fan.

"You know the song by Phil Collins, ‘In the Air of the Night,' about that guy who coulda saved that other guy from drownin' but didn't," Eminem raps in the song. "Then Phil saw it all, then at a show he found him? That's kinda how this is: You coulda rescued me from drownin'. Now it's too late, I'm on a thousand downers now, I'm drowsy."

Phil Collins Debunks Urban Legend

Thankfully, the urban legend is so prevalent that Collins himself has addressed it himself numerous times, dispelling the tale while also revealing the actual genesis behind the song. Though he insists the song is not about witnessing a murder, Collins isn't even too sure about its meaning.

In an interview with the BBC he admitted, "I don't know what this song is about."

"When I was writing this I was going through a divorce. And the only thing I can say about it is that it's obviously in anger. It's the angry side, or the bitter side of a separation," he continued, referring to his split from first wife Andrea Bertorelli.

"So what makes it even more comical is when I hear these stories which started many years ago, particularly in America, of someone come up to me and say, ‘Did you really see someone drowning?' I said, ‘No, wrong,'" he then added, referencing the legend. "And then every time I go back to America the story gets Chinese whispers, it gets more and more elaborate."

He concluded, "It's so frustrating, 'cos this is one song out of all the songs probably that I've ever written that I really don't know what it's about, you know."

Collins also addressed the tale during a 2016 interview on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, after the late night host repeated the story for his studio audience.

"Unfortunately, none of it's true," Collins told Fallon.

"I was just pissed off. I was angry," he reiterated. "You go through a divorce, and sometimes it's like, ‘I love you, I love you, don't hang up.' And then it's like, ‘F–k you,' and then, of course, that's where a song like ‘In the Air Tonight' comes out. There's obviously a lot of anger in there."

The 2026 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place on November 14, though Collins told BBC Breakfast in May 2026 that he probably won't perform at the event, citing health reasons.
