The Greatest Women's Tennis Player Ever Is Returning to Tennis at 44
Serena Williams has accomplished everything an athlete could ever dream of. She won 23 Grand Slams in her career. She made millions in endorsement money. Her upbringing with her sister Venus was even made into an Academy Award-winning film just a few years ago.
All of that won't be stopping Williams from trying to add to her resume with a comeback to the WTA four years after her original retirement. The Telegraph is reporting that Williams has asked for a doubles wild card to play with Victoria Mboko at the Queen's Club Championships in June.
Williams hasn't played professional tennis since a third-round loss at the 2022 U.S. Open. She hasn't won a major since the 2017 Australian Open. She was famously pregnant with her first child when she took home that trophy. It was one of the defining accomplishments of her career.
Years later, Williams remains one of the most popular athletes in the world. She stays in the public eye with her endorsements for Ro, a GLP-1 weight loss drug for which she has numerous commercials and an entire ad campaign. Williams is undoubtedly in good enough physical shape to play after losing 34 pounds since retirement.
This story has been gaining traction for quite some time after it was announced that Williams was once again in the drug testing pool and had been technically available to play since February. She hasn't spoken herself on the comeback, but that's only a matter of time.
The Queen's Club Championships are a lead-up event to Wimbledon in July. It's safe to assume Williams could be looking for an entry into her favorite tournament, one that she has won seven times in her career.
Serena's sister, Venus, is still on the WTA Tour at 45 years old. They have played so many doubles tournaments together in their careers, and fans will surely want to see them take the court together one more time during Serena's comeback.
