The Miracle of Spring: Watch the Intimate and Peaceful Moment Baby Bluebirds Hatch
Did you know that birds typically only build nests when they're expecting babies? We recently shared a video of a bluebird carefully building her nest, and now, thanks to Nest Box Live, it's time to watch her tiny babies finally hatch.
Spring always brings little reminders of how incredible nature can be, and this peaceful video of baby bluebirds hatching might be one of the sweetest yet. The clip captures the tiny birds emerging from their eggs inside a quiet nest, giving us a rare glimpse at one of nature's most beautiful moments. It also shows the mama bluebird carefully making room in the nest by removing the broken eggshells after the babies hatch. The entire scene feels so serene, and it's exactly the kind of wholesome content people can't stop watching.

What Do Bluebirds Do With Unhatched Eggs?
What Nest Box Live didn't explain is what happened to the fifth egg in the nest that never hatched.
According to the Avian Report, bluebirds typically lay between four and five eggs, though some nests may contain as many as seven. Their incubation period usually lasts between 11 and 19 days, with an average of about 13.5 days. Bluebirds living in warmer southern states also tend to have slightly shorter incubation periods than birds in colder northern regions.
If an egg still hasn't hatched within about three days after the other chicks emerge, the mother bird usually recognizes that something went wrong. Studies show that roughly 17% of eggs never hatch.
So what happens to those unhatched bluebird eggs? In many cases, the parents eventually remove them from the nest by rolling them out. Other times, the eggs may accidentally get crushed as the growing chicks move around inside the crowded nest. If that happens, the female bluebird will typically remove the broken shell pieces afterward.
Sometimes bluebirds will even build a brand-new nest directly on top of the failed clutch and begin another breeding attempt during the same season. Other times, they simply abandon the nest altogether and start over somewhere new.
