Backyard Baseball Returns This Summer with New Features and Nostalgic Characters

We thought the days of picking Pablo because he was fast or repeating catchphrases like, "Mo Vaughn will make it Mo Better" were long gone - nothing but a distant memory from childhood in the '90s.

Alas, that beloved video game is coming back this summer, and it's not just kids who are bursting with excitment.

The game is the all-new Backyard Baseball. Dropping later this summer on July 9, it marks the first brand-new entry for the beloved Backyard Sports franchise in 15 years.

What Will the New Backyard Baseball Game Look Like?

In an exclusive interview with Sports Illustrated, Playground Productions CEO Lindsay Barnett pulled back the curtain on exactly what fans can expect. It's a stunning, feature-packed revival that absolutely deserves the hype. To bring the neighborhood crew into the modern era, developers built the game for all major platforms - meaning players can draft their squads on Steam, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch.

It's easy to forget that the original games relied on simple pixel sprites, and the creators wanted to balance that historic aesthetic with modern technology.

To achieve that, the new title will be a full 3D game but will purposefully incorporate classic 2D elements. "Technology has come a long ways in 15 years," Barnett explained. "Being able to do this as a 3D game also allows us to do camera movements and updates and all sorts of things that the 2D game was not going to be able to do." However, to preserve that essential nostalgic texture, traditional touches - like the classic individual character baseball cards - will retain their retro 2D style.

The studio also prioritized roster authenticity, ensuring that all 30 original Backyard Sports characters - including Kenny Kawaguchi, Stephanie Morgan, Kiesha Phillips, and the undisputed G.O.A.T. himself, Pablo Sanchez - are returning with their original designs intact.

The game will also feature three hidden, unlockable characters at launch to bring the total roster up to 33, alongside future plans for expanding the universe with downloadable content (DLC), featuring a mix of current and iconic retired MLB players.

Multiplayer, Night Mode, and the Road to Launch

Beyond the classic core gameplay, the revival is introducing massive franchise-first features. Responding to the top request from fans, the game will officially feature a dedicated multiplayer mode so friends and families can face off directly. Additionally, players will finally be able to play under the lights with an all-new "Night Mode," which swaps out the traditional daylight setting for beautiful evening stadiums complete with character-specific home run fireworks.

For players who want a quick challenge, the game introduces a highly competitive "Backyard Derby" mode. Mirroring the MLB's Home Run Derby, this mode forces hitters to square up against rapid, back-to-back power-up pitches. The game includes a wide spectrum of difficulty tiers, ranging from accessible beginner setups to intense, competitive difficulty levels.

This major video game release caps off a massive year of momentum for the franchise's universe expansion. Earlier this year, the studio teamed up with Lighthouse Studios to release Backyard Sports: The Animated Special. The 12-minute animated event starred the voices of major talent like Tiffany Haddish, Ego Nwodim, Donald Faison, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse. After a premier screening at Dave & Buster's in Los Angeles on January 24, 2026, the short rolled out to YouTube and Prime Video, giving fans their first taste of the resurrected characters.

If you want to swing the bat early, you don't even have to wait until July 9. Playground Productions has launched an expansive national event calendar, bringing early playable builds of the game directly to fans at minor and major league stadiums across the country. Gamers can test out the title on the road at upcoming stadium stops including the St. Louis Cardinals, Milwaukee Brewers, San Jose Giants, and New York Mets throughout June, leading right up to the official mid-summer release.
