Spark of the Everflame—the first book in the The Kindred’s Curse Saga—by Penn Cole follows Diem Bellator, a mortal whose predictable and simple life shatters when her mother vanishes. As she searches for answers, Diem is thrust into the dangerous world of the Descended—powerful rulers born of gods and mortals. In this new world, she suspects the powerful Prince Luther Corbois might be responsible for her mother’s disappearance.

As tensions rise between mortals and their divine oppressors, Diem finds herself caught between a resistance movement and the handsome heir to the throne, forcing her to navigate court politics, hidden truths and loyalties. Brimming with palace intrigue, simmering romance and high-stakes conflict, this first installment lays the foundation for a seriously epic romantasy series.

From indie romantasy to BookTok sensation

In 2023, Cole independently published Spark of the Everflame, and it quickly became one of BookTok’s biggest breakout successes.

After gaining a devoted online following and generating buzz across social media, the book was picked up by Atria publishing and re-released in 2024. “Given that I originally self-published, every day was a huge learning experience! I think I made every mistake a person could possibly make, and many of them cost me dearly in time, money and sales,” Cole told Writer’s Digest.

“However, what it taught me is that, as long as you really do your best to do right by the people who support you, there’s very little that can’t be overcome. I’ve tried really hard to keep my readers at the forefront of my mind and always consider how my decisions will impact them.”

It’s official: ‘Everflame’ is coming to the small screen!

On April 17, Deadline announced that Hulu has taken Everflame in for development. Heidi Cole McAdams (The 100, Death and Other Details) is currently at the helm as showrunner, working with 20th Television and Penn Cole as producer.

“I’m thrilled to be working with Heidi Cole McAdams to adapt The Kindred’s Curse Saga,” Cole told Deadline. “She truly understands the core messages of the series and what makes Diem’s story compelling. Heidi has an incredible eye for re-imagining the story for a visual medium while preserving the aspects of the books that readers love most, and her enthusiasm for collaboration makes her an author’s dream to work with.”

When it comes to revered romantasies, toeing the line between reader-favorite plot points and executing the drama on screen is a delicate dance, but Cole feels confident in McAdams’ abilities. “I have no doubt this adaptation will be as beloved to new audiences as it will be to the series’ passionate fanbase.”

“It’s in early development stages and I’m still working on scripts but the two of us are doing everything we can to help bring the world of Emarion to life,” McAdams said in a video posted on Instagram. Both McAdams and Cole emphasized their commitment to staying true to what fans love most about the books. And Cole couldn’t resist teasing one particularly exciting scene.

“I really love the approach we’re taking with Luther in particular,” adds Cole. “There is one scene in the pilot—you know the one I’m talking about—that is chef’s kiss. When readers see it they are going to lose their minds. It’s so so good.”
