White Castle Announces Permanent Menu Change at All Restaurants

On Monday, June 1, fast-food chain White Castle announced a permanent menu change, and it's one that should please vegetarians. I'm a vegetarian, so I was pleased to see a press release about this move slip into my email box.

White Castle is officially adding a veggie slider to its menu at all locations across the U.S., according to a statement from the chain, which offers vegetarian diners a "flavor-packed nonmeat option" on top of their beef, chicken and fish sliders.

This isn't just any veggie slider, either, because it comes with a twist. The new menu item is a Southwest Veggie Slider and offers a crispy brown rice crust and delicious blend of six vegetables, including sweet potatoes, black beans, corn, red bell peppers, onions and carrots. It's all seasoned with smoky chipotle and sweet BBQ flavors and served up on a classic slider bun with a slice of jalapeño cheese.

"White Castle's innovation pipeline is fueled by consumer insights and, by listening to Cravers, it became clear which type of veggie slider most appealed to them," the company said in a statement provided to Men's Journal. "Last summer, White Castle conducted consumer research to help its innovation team identify the flavors, ingredients and overall profile customers wanted most in a nonmeat Slider."

White Castle Made the Change After Getting Positive Feedback for the Menu Item

White Castle added that because of the positive feedback from White Castle's loyal fanbase, the innovation team "ultimately chose to use a Dr. Praeger's veggie patty as the base for the Southwest Veggie Slider."

But don't rush over to your local White Castle right away to snag this new menu item, because change takes time. The Southwest Veggie Slider will debut starting June 15 at all White Castle restaurants. Also, from July 1 through 31, Craver Nation Rewards members will be able to try the Southwest Veggie Slider with a specially priced combo meal of two Southwest Veggie Sliders, a small fry and a small soft drink for only $5.

White Castle got its start back in 1921, and they continue to evolve with the times. As a vegetarian, it's getting easier to eat "normally" out at restaurants and fast-food chains, but there are still strides that need to be made. Not every fast-food chain has decent vegetarian options, so White Castle making this permanent veggie addition to their menu goes a long way.
