Stock Up Now: Whey Protein Prices Are Only Going Higher
In a classic case of supply and demand, whey protein prices are surging. Five pound protein containers on Amazon are nearly $100 depending on the brand. What was once considered just a cheap byproduct of cheese manufacturing now headlines the massive dietary supplement market.
Since whey protein is a byproduct, and not a primary product, it leads to a bottleneck in production. It is unlikely that dairy farmers are going to raise more cows just to produce more whey. So there are limits to how much can be made. Couple that with the latest protein craze, and it creates problems.
The main reason for the whey protein shortage is that everything has protein in it now. Packaged goods like cookies, chips, and crackers have additional protein. You can even get protein in your coffee. Compared to just a few years ago, you now have massive corporations competing to get protein from suppliers.
In addition, you still have supplement companies fighting for their own protein supply. While the margins on protein are not great compared to other products, the fact remains that nearly every top supplement company has one, if not multiple, protein powder products.
Some people have pointed to increased use of GLP-1 products as a reason for the shortage. Doctors recommend protein supplements to these patients since the increased appetite suppression makes nutrient intake even more vital. To that I say… maybe. Sure, this is the advice given but it doesn't mean people follow it. I would be surprised if GLP-1 use made a meaningful difference in the protein market.
Whatever the cause, the reality for consumers is simple: whey protein is harder to find and more expensive than it has ever been. Relief is likely still a year or more away, as new processing facilities won't come online until late 2026 at the earliest. In the meantime, shoppers may want to consider alternatives like pea or egg white protein, or simply stock up now before prices climb further. One thing is clear: when an entire industry decides to put protein in everything, someone eventually has to pay for it.
