‘Black Phone' Actor Signs On To Newest ‘John Wick' Spinoff

The newest spinoff in Lionsgate's John Wick franchise, Caine, has cast Mason Thames. Now in production, Caine is being directed by martial artist Donnie Yen, who also plays the titular character.

Thames joins Rina Sawayama and Dacre Montgomery, along with Yen. Sawayama is reprising her role as Akira opposite Yen's Caine. Neither Thames' nor Montgomery's roles have been announced as of yet. Keanu Reeves is not expected to appear in Caine at this time.

The film will follow Caine and Akira's "unfinished business," said chair of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, Adam Fogelson. Caine served as an antagonist in John Wick: Chapter 4, but by the end of the film, he no longer had cause to harm John Wick.

Thames is best known for his work in the Black Phone franchise and for playing Hiccup in the live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon. He is also set to star in Idiots with Dave Franco, who he previously worked with in Regretting You.

Caine is the second spin-off film in the John Wick franchise. The first was John Wick: Ballerina starring Ana de Armas as assassin Eve Macarro. The film received positive reviews and grossed $140 million worldwide. The film also found success on HBO Max after its theatrical run concluded. Ballerina was set between the third and fourth John Wick movies. Prior to the film was the mini-series The Continental, which was the first time that the franchise focused on a new protagonist. The series followed a younger Winston Scott, played by Colin Woodell, as he works his way towards owning the hotel for assassins.

The people producing Caine will be much of the same team who have overseen the rest of the John Wick franchise. Yen, who has acted in and directed countless action films, will bring his signature filmmaking style to John Wick as well. Reeves and Yen will also serve as producers. The screenplay is being written by Mattson Tomlin, who wrote The Batman Part II.

It has also been confirmed that John Wick: Chapter 5 is in development with Reeves returning as John Wick. Chad Stahelski, who has directed every one of the main films in the franchise, has said that this fifth film will be different from the rest now that Wick's struggle with The High Table has ended. There is no official release date, but it is expected to debut after Caine.
