Metallica's 1996 Album 'Load' Debuted 30 Years Ago Today
Most bands worth their salt go through some kind of metamorphosis in their career. They develop their sound to keep things fresh. Sometimes, fans respond positively to the musical shift. Other times, the new pivot is more divisive than anticipated. Metallica's Load fell into the latter camp at the time of its release.
Debuting on this day in 1996, Metallica's sixth studio album embraced a more hard rock sound, with the group abandoning their thrash metal roots. The recording process saw the metal act incorporate non-metal influences, resulting in an amalgam of styles such as grunge, blues rock, and Southern rock. Lyrically, Load was Metallica's most personal record yet, as lead singer and rhythm guitarist James Hetfield drew on his internal struggles. There was even a musical change during the recording process: lead guitarist Kirk Hammett played rhythm guitar for the first time.
Chart-wise, Load was a success. After its release on June 4, 1996, it skyrocketed to No. 1 on the US Billboard 200 chart, where it reigned for four weeks. The album also topped a whopping 22 other weekly global charts, including the UK Albums and UK Rock & Metal Albums charts. It achieved Platinum certification in 14 countries and Gold in 12.
Critically, Load received mixed reviews. Some retrospectives paint the album in a better light, with publications like Louderlauding Load for being "the point where Metallica were still truly blazing their own trail and letting their ambition guide their creative impulses." Decibel Magazinewrote that the record "deserves praise," adding that "its flaws run deep, but it contains some of Metallica's most interesting and affecting material."
In 2025, Bob Rock, who produced Load and Reload, the follow-up to the former, defended this era of Metallica. "Those records are on par with everything else that we've done creatively...I'm very proud of those records," he said.
